		<description>Student Competition 2011

Proposed as a small family of like-minded urban furnishings, the Barristro objects are designed for an array of uses and users. The clean, fluid, single-sheet construction ensures that each piece in the family plays well with its siblings, and altering objects to accommodate cycle parking is as easy as punching a few pre-installation attachment points.

With a sweet paint job or added cushion the family can be ready to move anywhere: the pocket park down the street, the riverside promenade or the hypo-allergenic hospital lobby. The Barristro family believes beautiful, well-designed gestures create the best impressions.

As an architectural intern in a large firm, I was given tasks ranging from design of an urban park to modeling as-built, &#38; construction documents. The highlight of the summer was engaging in a charrette in Chicago for an avant vertical rehabilitation project.

		<description> MAKE Collaboration

Our selected submission for the Emerging Terrain’s “Stored Potential 2: Transport(ation) directs its attention to food miles. Given the banner’s context and the proactive focus on transportation, it raises a question about local usage. What is Omaha, Nebraska’s role in global, domestic and local transportation of goods? Being a central and remote point of the United States, the role applies to each consumer whether accepted or not. Goods that are part of a local movement are only transported 56 food miles before they reach their consumer while goods that are not, travel 1,494 food miles (96 percent farther than the former, 4 percent of the latter).

The banner displays a portion of the 2005 Nebraska Land Use Map’s analysis (represented by circles). Four percent of the circles are highlighted to graphically display this outrageous comparison.

Lastly, this submission hopes to set an example for not only food miles but “bag miles.” Designed within the banner are bag cut-lines to which they can easily be reused for local bags. If selected, these bags will eventually make a statement and only travel the 56 “bag miles” to catch their goods.

		<description>Flip Tables
UNL 5th Year
They are nothing fancy, and very functional, but turned out nice nonetheless. Because they were to be shipped across the country, they needed to fold flat, or flat pack. The need to be shipped took out the option to glue the joints so screws were used. The shelf inside can be reorientated depending on the orientation of each table. It can serve as a divider or a shelf also.

Pen Exhibit
UNL 4th Year
This exhibit was designed in a fourth year architecture studio. The origin of the idea came from our professor asking us to pick an item that was made up of at least five pieces. From there he told us to design an exhibit for that item so that our users can better understand that item.

The object I chose was a pen. The pen is a mighty tool yet very unassuming. Instead of making one object, I chose to make a field of objects that you differentiate through colors but ultimately you see as a field or whole. To force users into an always awkward position, the surface you write on is always changing around you. and the pens are attached through stretch cord, so it is always pulling away from you.

Production time took about 24 hours straight, the welding taking the most time.

An unexpected result was that pen tips could break when slingshotted. This was the best output of the entire installation.

		<description>UNL 4th Year
HistoryThe Function, began as a study of the history of desks in product design class during the fall of 2009. Through that study I realized that desks have this horrible way of closing the user in with junk on either side. The other glaring issue was that popular desks new and old are one-dimensional, meaning they are meant for you to sit in “front” of it and use no other wide equitably.

One such desk in example, the pedestal desk. It only allows you pull your chair up right in the middle and then you are sandwiched by two large bulky stacks of drawers. What are in those drawers? I think everyone knows nothing more than junk; things you don’t need but you put there because it is out of sight.

&#60;img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/193073/2717404/march25_retouch-crop_900.jpg" width="900" height="604" width_o="1538" height_o="1033" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/193073/2717404/march25_retouch-crop_o.jpg" data-mid="13895731"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
ConceptSo what is important in a desk? If you ask me, hands down it is the top surface. The surface is what makes a desk. It is the place that you do everything related to "desking," what’s underneath is nothing less than baggage. This baggage proves using any other side than the middle front useless because the one cannot engage themselves well enough with the desk. My research led me to this excellent diagram of what portion of a desk you can actually use. Another obvious move but rarely realized comes from the notion that the human body is not meant to come into contact with sharp or blunt objects. Looking through this type of research led me to the consummate designer Philippe Starck’s Baobab desk. It seems to solve most of the problems of ergonomics and also un-coincidentally, the Baobob mimics the shape of what is usable space diagram.
&#60;img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/193073/2717404/droppedImage-1.jpg" width="296" height="243" width_o="296" height_o="243" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/6/193073/2717404/droppedImage-1_o.jpg" data-mid="13912618"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Taking these items as precedents to either follow or throw away, I decided that the surface is where all the function should happen - it just needs a slight thickening. Packing all the things that are necessary and useful in a desk into the surface was important to me: Marginal storage, cord management (because desks are now host to the technology that surrounds us), and ergonomics. Above all the desk surface is to be fully used, not over or undersized and meant for people to pull up and use it any way they want. I removed as much clutter as I could much off the top of the desk as possible, IE: monitors are on their own stand, keyboard and mouse have a slide in drawer with cords that run through the desk rather than on top and an external hard drive can have its own bin with cord routing within the desk. I believe this desk should serve all the functions that a well-designed work space should include without a bunch of extra junk that is not necessary and could be stored other places thus rendering your desk, a desk - not a storage unit.

		<description>UNL 3rd Year

A very constraining site (42' x 150') to which I designed based on fitting the program to the site. The program is distinct viewed from the exterior based on free flowing program as it dictates form; the exterior fenestration allows an idea of what is happening inside.

To counter the intensity of public interaction put on the street side and lack of privacy on the first floor, the West facade is very dominating and has very specific window placement. It is a shield to the public and in the massing models of the East facade you see how much more private it feels and broken up into smaller spaces denoting a comfort level where you face another neighbor instead of two public venues like the West and South.

The long hallway serves as the organizing device within the otherwise free flowing main floor. One is pulled down the hall by the view of the red cedar clad garage at the end and by the light wall opening in the floor above.

		<description>UNL 4th Year

To generate a new interest in a student group we were leaders of, Nick and I proposed the idea of a bold new brand. Our school is littered with posters announcing events and we had to find a way to stand out. Magenta became the color of choice and it along with a strong typeface helped create exactly what we wanted, more awareness for our already popular group. The executive leadership board would wear magenta colored shirts on the days of our meetings or events thus signifying to other students something was happening (if they happened to miss our Facebook, Email or Twitter messages).

An exciting validation of our successful campaign and year, was the awarding of National Honor Award, 2010 by the national AIAS.

		<description>While printed calendars are becoming more and more obsolete, I could not stand the thought of life without a good ol’ fashion wall calendar. So we made our own, the Vertical. I kept the idea of the Vertical simple and functional with an added hint of sex panther. By choosing a vertical timeline, as opposed to the traditional serpentine approach, it kept our calendar easy to read, and downright fun to look at.

Our incredibly sophisticated (sarcasm) magnet system allows you to easily replace your calendar monthly, without having to puncture the calendar or refit at all (see diagram)! Make only four simple tack holes in the wall. Or, do it your own way and make your own wall art installation as you add each month.

The Prop is an affordable and portable laptop stand designed with my business partner and good friend Nicholas Pajerski. It was inspired by the need to cool our laptops in architecture school. Finding none at a reasonable price, Nick designed the first Prop in Adobe Illustrator and preceded to cut it out on our laser cutters. Many, many iterations later, the aesthetics have changed, the design however is just as good as the vintage. Buy at MAKEcollab.com
